Crop year: 2021

Founded more than 200 years ago, Finca Armenia Lorena has a deep legacy in the region. The farm had been passed down from generation to generation, and has been maintained with a care that's obvious to visitors, with many historic structures and implements still intact. Despite the farm's rich legacy, Doña Sofia and her staff have adapted to innovative processing methods and data-driven farming approaches. The farm is large, and is separated into plots by elevation. Varieties grown on various small lots include Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Pacamara, Geisha, and for certified organics Anacafe 14 and Sarchimor. Armenia Lorena produces mainly washed coffees, utilizing processes and tools developed in Colombia. Because of the warmer San Marcos climate, parchment is dried under canopies to maintain more even temperatures for 8-9 dry days, up to 15 days with rain. The farm boasts an historic small dairy farm as well, which provides organic fertilizer for the coffee plants. The farm also generates its own solar electricity.

ELLA - Women Owned Farms Program

For more than a decade we've cultivated deep relationships with a few women farm owners around our home in Huehuetenango. For decades producers like Ana Maria Ortega and Paty Perez have shown us the special strength, resiliency, and generosity of women in key leadership roles at the farm level.

Across Guatemala, women are the majority labor force on coffee farms, from picking to export. And around the world women comprise up to 70% of farm work while owning disproportionately few assets and land. Despite limited access, discrimination and violence, many women have forged their own paths for their families through their coffee farms. As part of our initiative to diversify our sourcing, provide market access, and highlight the stories of powerful women, we bring you ELLA - Women Producers of Guatemala.

Through our QC Lab in Guatemala City, we're expanding our reach while doing due diligence necessary to invest in long-term partnerships empowering more women producers. As we find outstanding farms in sync with our ethos, we'll begin to feature them singularly, such as Doña Sofia from Finca Armenia Lorena. The ELLA blend will be a curation of women-produced lots we're onboarding, with a crowd-pleasing brown sugary sweetness, full creamy body, orange and light tropical fruits.
